Praised as “vocally delightful” (Opera Canada), Morgan Reid is a versatile performer of recital, musical theatre, dance, and operatic repertoire. Some selected stage credits include Tytania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Happy Prince in Arden’s The Happy Prince, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical, and Ensemble for Against the Grain’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème (2019), which was streamed nationwide on CBC Arts. In 2022, she premiered a cycle of art songs written for her by Brazilian-American composer Paulo do Nascimento Brito, and joined the Summer 2022 production of acclaimed Canadian music drama The Bells of Baddeck, starring as Mabel Hubbard Bell, and the reprised her titular role of The Happy Prince at the Highland Arts Theatre.
From 2020-2022, Morgan has had the honour to perform in as a selected soloist in the University of Toronto Faculty of Music’s prestigious John R. Stratton Visitor in Music masterclasses. Through these opportunities, Morgan has sung for Lawrence Brownlee (2020), Susan Graham (2021), and Margot Garrett (2022). Also at U of T, Morgan has been a frequent soloist in their Vocalis vocal series. Vocalis programs have included A Few Figs from Fiddles (2020), a recital featuring works by rising singer/composer Danika Loren; The Song Narrative Project: Mother Earth (2019), in which Morgan also choreographed and assistant directed; A Night at the Opera (2021), curated by Wendy Nielsen and staged by Anna Theodosakis; Hidden Gems of Opera (2018), curated by David Eliakis; and a program of French mélodie (2022) curated by Nathalie Paulin. Other performance engagements during this time have included a variety of operettas in concert with COSA Canada, one of which meant Morgan stepping in at a moment’s notice to perform Josephine in G&S’ H.M.S. Pinafore in February 2020.
Morgan fostered a love of contemporary opera and art song, working closely with emerging composers and often pursuing avenues for new music. Her repertoire list included Wainwright, Ives, Heggie, Burry, Honegger, Messiaen, Beach, Copland, Beckwith, Adams, and Archer, with a fondness for English art song and opera (particularly Britten!). Morgan premiered a programme of new works for chamber ensemble and voice as a part of the University of Toronto New Music Festival (2019), and performed as a soloist in the digital stream of the Beckwith Songbook with Confluence Concerts (2020). She also presented a program of contemporary opera scenes with Against the Grain’s National Opera Institute in 2019, including works by Previn, Adams, Golijov, and Britten.
Morgan’s roots are in musical theatre performance, starting with her first major musical in 2009, starring as Annie in Annie. The performance bug took hold from that point forward! Highlights of her music theatre repertoire include the Hunyak in Chicago, the world premiere of Kitchen Party (lead role of Andrea) at the Highland Arts Theatre, and Cinderella in Into the Woods with Neptune Theatre’s YPCo. Morgan also danced competitively from 2011-2016 in jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, contemporary/modern, Broadway cabaret, both in ensemble and as a soloist, with Cape Breton School of the Arts, Northside Dance, and on the competitive hip hop team for the Mount Allison Dance Team. Morgan taught and choreographed for recreational hip hop dance classes for Mount Allison University students from 2015-2017, and has assisted in choreographing for the MtA Opera Workshop, in productions at the Highland Arts Theatre, and more.
She is an alumna of SongFest’s Young Artists Program, Orford Musique, Centre for Opera Studies in Italy (COSI), and Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Morgan holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Mount Allison University, where she studied with Dr. Vicki St. Pierre, and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Prof. Darryl Edwards.
